PROJECT OVERVIEWThe Mount Yerer biodiversity restoration project focuses on restoring degraded forest landscapes on the slopes of Mount Yerer, east of Addis Ababa.
Delivered in partnership with Nature Ethiopia and the Oromia Forest and Wildlife Enterprise (OFWE), the initiative supports the recovery of native habitats through indigenous tree planting and long-term ecological stewardship.
By restoring forest cover and encouraging the return of native species, the project aims to strengthen biodiversity, improve ecosystem resilience, and safeguard important natural resources for future generations.

Why this matters
Mount Yerer's forest ecosystems have experienced decades of degradation caused by deforestation, unsustainable land use and habitat fragmentation.
The loss of native vegetation has reduced biodiversity, weakened watershed functions, and increased vulnerability to soil erosion and climate-related pressures.
Without intervention, these environmental impacts continue to threaten both wildlife and the communities that depend on healthy ecosystems.

The Oromia Forest and Wildlife Enterprise (OFWE) is responsible for the protection and sustainable management of forests and wildlife resources throughout the Oromia Region.
Together with the Ethiopian Conservation Trust, these organisations are leading efforts to restore a degraded area of Mount Yerer and support the long-term recovery of native ecosystems.
