PROJECT OVERVIEWThe Wukro Riverbanks Restoration Project focuses on restoring degraded waterways and strengthening environmental resilience in the Tigray Highlands.
Working alongside St Mary's Agricultural College and local communities, the initiative combines indigenous planting, erosion-control measures, and landscape restoration to reduce environmental risks while supporting sustainable livelihoods.
Through practical conservation and education, the project aims to create long-term benefits for both people and nature.

Why this matters
Riverbanks in Wukro and Kilte Awlaelo have experienced increasing degradation due to erosion, vegetation loss and changing environmental pressures.
When soil is washed away, farmland becomes less productive, flooding risks increase and communities become more vulnerable to food insecurity.

Restoring the landscape
The project combines indigenous planting with practical soil and water conservation measures.
Key activities include:
Planting 2,000 indigenous trees and shrubs
Constructing 5,000 m² of terraces
Stabilising riverbanks
Reducing soil erosion
Improving water retention
Supporting long-term agricultural resilience

Led by St Mary's Agricultural College, the project creates opportunities for students and local communities to participate directly in restoration activities.

St Mary's Agricultural College is a vocational and agricultural training institution based in Wukro, Tigray. The College supports regional development through practical education, agricultural research, and community engagement.
Working closely with local communities and farmers, the College provides training in crop and livestock production while contributing to sustainable land management initiatives across the region.
As lead partner for this project, St Mary's Agricultural College brings local expertise, educational capacity, and long-term stewardship to the restoration of degraded riverbanks in Wukro and Kilte Awlaelo.
